Chowk Residency with Raka Maitra
Residency Structure | 16th – 27th June 2025
This 10-day residency offers an immersive training experience led by Raka Maitra, focusing on the foundational movement principles of Odissi and Seraikela Chhau, which form the core of Chowk’s methodology. The residency will explore the intricacies of these movement traditions, deconstructing and adapting them to the creation of new works. Participants will engage in:
1. Training in the Chowk Movement Methodology
Odissi & Seraikela Chhau Foundations – Developing strength, agility, and articulation through these classical forms.
Deconstruction of Movement – Understanding how these forms are reinterpreted within Chowk’s methodology for contemporary choreographic work.
2. Training in Gaze & Expression
Refining Drishti (gaze) control and its connection to movement.
Exploring focus, intent, and projection in performance.
3. Improvisation & Choreographic Exploration
Guided improvisation to explore movement vocabulary within the Chowk framework.
Developing and working on segments from Raka Maitra’s choreographic work Second Sunrise.
4. Additional Training Opportunity
As part of the residency, participants will also have the opportunity to attend regular Odissi classes held at the studio in the evenings, further deepening their understanding of the form. Class details can be found at: https://www.chowk.sg/training.

Introducing the Chowk Studio Series
Chowk is excited to launch the Chowk Studio Series, a platform designed to showcase young and emerging artists, as well as artists traveling through Singapore. This initiative provides a space for performance, artistic exchange, and community-building, offering artists the opportunity to connect, share their work, and expand their networks.
As part of this series, Chowk will offer the studio space free of charge and provide marketing support to help artists reach a wider audience. The performances will be presented under the flagship of the Chowk Studio Series, creating a curated environment that nurtures new talent and fosters meaningful engagement with the arts community.
Through this initiative, we aim to build a vibrant and supportive space where emerging artists can refine their craft, showcase their artistry, and collaborate with like-minded individuals.
